ABOUT PROGRAM

Limited funds available for eligible households to receive a one-time emergency rental or utility assistance.


SHFA will issue rent or utility assistance payments directly to the landlord or utility company. Once your application is approved and SHFA has received all necessary Landlord Forms, SHFA will issue payment via check within 3 business days. Program recipients are encouraged to contact the property owner or property manager once they are notified that their application is approved; this may help encourage landlords to return necessary forms in a timely manner. Payment cannot be issued without the landlord verification form and all other supporting documentations.

Utility Assistance

Eligible households may receive assistance with the following:

- Electric 

- Gas 

- Water 

- Sewer 

Documentation Required:

- Proof of identification 

- Intake form completed by head of household 

- Copy of past due or current bill

Please Note:

Past Due -  SHFA can only pay a verified one-month (or 30-day period) billed portion. 

Current Bill - Payment cannot be made more than 10 calendar days prior to the utility bill due date.  


If approved, SHFA will contact the service provider listed on the Release Of Information form to verify outstanding balance before SHFA can issue any payment. 

Rental Assistance

Eligible households may qualify for one of the following:

- One month of past due balance of rent or mortgage 

- One month of current balance of rent or mortgage  

Documentation Required:

- Photo Identification 

- Intake form completed by head of household

- Landlord letter or rent verification form (dated and signed by landlord)


If approved, SHFA will contact the property owner or property manager listed on the Release of Information form to collect the (i) Landlord Verification Form (ii) Landlord W-9 form.

The following conditions must be met before payment is made:

Past due rent - 

  • Amount paid must be totally outstanding at the time of payment 
  • All other resources have been exhausted 
  • The home/apartment is the client’s primary residence 
  • Client must be the one responsible for the payment 
  • Payment is limited to one month of assistance per spending period
  • Payment must guarantee 30 days of additional service  


 Current rent -  Payment cannot be made more than 10 calendar days prior rent due.
